There is a distinction between the ideas of change, improvement, and optimization that I think you should know about because understanding the difference will change your approach to things.
Optimizing everything is one of the biggest concepts of our time. In a recent article by FITT Insider, in an article section called “Optimize Everything” Joe Vennare states: “As we suspected, the high-performance lifestyle has taken hold. Everything that can be optimized will be.”
But change is not optimization.
- Change is usually about making a fundamental shift in a way, a method, or an approach. It’s the first move, and hopefully, it’s the right move in that it’s based on the primary principle that gives the change it’s power.
- Improvement is also not optimization, it’s making a change that’s already been made to a new level of refinement and effectiveness.
- Optimization is technically the whole process from change to improve and ultimately to optimizing. BUT, when you “optimize,” you are usually making changes that are typically more intense than someone who is just beginning a change process is willing to make.
The reason that is, is because the person is largely caught up in negative addictions and they are not yet ready for a positive addiction.
To give you an analogy, think “Usain Bolt” going from couch to track. That’s (change). Many of us could pull that off, but still, you would need inspiration, internal motivation, and probably some pain to move away from.
Usain now going from a twenty-second 100-yard dash, which many people can do, to twelve seconds is a major (improvement) but still an improvement over the change from couch to track. And that improvement would take a good deal of time.
And ultimately shaving off 2.42 seconds from that time to arrive at the current world record, which he owns at 9.58 seconds is called optimization.
Now here’s the moral of the INSIGHT.
Change Hero’s, if you want to create, accomplish or achieve something big, your own “world record” relative to your strengths, don’t start by trying to shave off 2.42 seconds right from the start.
What you want to do is determine the change you want to make and break it down into stages, starting with making sure the change is the right change, and ideally part of a broader set of objectives that you have in your life for motivation, and so you don’t make more out of the change than it needs to be. Change is usually not one thing, it’s a series of adjustments, modifications, etc, that will produce an outcome. Then you improve on the change and take it to new levels, and ultimately you optimize.
But too many of us try to make changes that are too big and too far in the future in that we just don’t have the support or the experience to sustain it. Optimization is when you make refinements that are only possible because of the foundation you have already created.
Got a change you are trying to make but stalling, staying stuck, or not making the progress you thought you would?
